International Literacy Week Celebrated in Reading Rooms under Learning to Read Programme

International Literacy Week was celebrated in all primary schools where Learning to Read programme is being implementing its activities for the promotion of reading habits among the school children especially among the children of the age group of 6 to 14 years of age. The reading based activities such as word game, paragraph reading, story telling, poem recitation and literacy based rallies and plays were organized in different schools. The  best performer in all activities were felicitated by the prizes. During the week a books exhibition was stalled at Suni educational blocks of Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh on the occasion of International Literacy Day on 8th September, 2010. About 1400

children from 19 educational blocks of Shimla district have participated in the district level support meet. The book stall was the main attraction among the school children where they were seen reading new books. On this occasion Mr. J. S. Negi, Deputy Director, Elementary Education has also visited the book stall and appreciated the books supplied through these Reading Rooms.  The ILD celebration in the government school is also a new experience to the children and the teachers. The students have participated with enthusiasm in reading based activities. They were found competitive to get prizes for their act. The teachers of most of the schools have participated in the ILD celebration with new ideas and supported the organization. Some teacher have contributed funds for the prizes and refreshment to the children on the occasion.
